MED, DBT & the Solo Practitioner

Applying MED-DBT strategies for complex presentations in individual practice

This training focuses on the practical application of DBT strategies within individual therapy for eating disorder presentations. It is designed for clinicians working in outpatient and private-practice settings who want to strengthen their use of DBT-informed approaches without running a comprehensive DBT programme.

The training emphasises formulation, behavioural targeting, session structure, and strategic use of DBT skills within individual eating disorder treatment. Participants will learn how to apply DBT principles in a way that is responsive to eating disorder presentations, treatment-interfering behaviours, and co-occurring presenting problems/symptoms.

Scope and suitability note

This training is designed for clinicians who already work with eating disorder presentations who are seeking to learn and strengthen their use of DBT strategies within individual therapy sessions for targeting eating disorders. It is particularly relevant for outpatient, community-based practices, and private-practice contexts where clinicians don’t belong to comprehensive/formal DBT or MED-DBT programmes and are not intending on starting up MED-DBT groups or programmes.

This training is not intended as:

  • An introductory training in eating disorder treatment for clinicians new to the eating disorder field. It presumes a good level of prior knowledge and experience in this area.

  • Comprehensive DBT training or as a substitute for full programme-based DBT education – e.g. the full MED-DBT* protocol (which would include multi-modal treatment: skills group, consultation team, individual treatment, phone coaching plus conceptualisation and formal protocols etc).

  • Advanced DBT** consultation-level training for clinicians already extensively trained in DBT. This is introductory level with regard to DBT and presumes no prior knowledge and will cover the basics.

*MED-DBT is a treatment that concurrently applies standard Linehan model of DBT with CBT-ED for severe and complex ED presentations – simultaneously, by the same individual practitioner.

** Those already proficient in the standard DBT model would be best suited to pursue a training in MED-DBT that is targeted for advanced DBT therapists.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Apply DBT principles and behavioural strategies within individual eating disorder therapy.

  • Use DBT target hierarchies to prioritise eating disorder behaviours and therapy-interfering behaviours.

  • Conduct chain and missing-links analyses with eating disorder behaviours.

  • Select and apply DBT skills strategically rather than generically within ED treatment.

Integrate DBT strategies alongside standard eating disorder interventions in individual therapy.

TARGET AUDIENCE

This training is designed for clinicians who already have a solid working knowledge of eating disorders and standard treatment approaches who are seeking an introduction to how DBT is applied to eating disorder treatment using the MED-DBT protocol.

No prior DBT training is required.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Shelly Hindle (she/her) is a Registered Clinical Psychologist with over two decades experience working across public mental health and specialist eating disorder services, including child and adolescent mental health, and adolescent and adult eating disorder care. She has held senior clinical and programme development roles within these services. She was the developer and continues to be the clinical lead of a Multi-Diagnostic Eating Disorders Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (MED-DBT) programme for adults with Anorexia Nervosa within a New Zealand specialist service, which was one of the first in the world to implement this treatment model, for which she won an award for innovation in mental health.

Shelly’s work spans a range of settings including private practice, adolescent MH services, day programmes, residential services, group programmes, and school-based mental health initiatives. She works internationally providing training, consultation, and team supervision, supports teams around the world to implement new DBT programmes and regularly presents at national and international conferences. She is involved in research and dissemination and publishes on DBT innovations she is involved with.

In 2025 Shelly was one of four co-convenors of the inaugural international MED-DBT conference, where she ran a number of events; including the design, convening and moderating of a plenary panel of lived experience experts with Autism who work in the field of DBT and ED’s, discussing neurodivergence and affirming care.

Her professional interests centre on training, consultation, and innovative implementation of DBT, with particular emphasis on adaptations of DBT for eating disorders (including MED-DBT), adolescents, trauma-related presentations, and complex, high-risk clinical populations.
