Running DBT Groups for Eating Disorders
Skills Group Options and Adaptations for Eating Disorders
This training provides a practical guide to running DBT-informed skills groups for eating disorders, drawing on established and published group models. The focus is on group structure, content selection, adaptation for eating disorder populations, and implementation considerations across adult and adolescent contexts.
The training reviews evidence-based DBT group options commonly used within eating disorder treatment and supports clinicians to make informed decisions about model fit, scope, and service implementation (*note Radically Open DBT (RO-DBT) is discussed at high level only and is not taught as a skills-based intervention in this training.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Shelly Hindle (she/her) is a Registered Clinical Psychologist with over two decades experience working across public mental health and specialist eating disorder services, including child and adolescent mental health, and adolescent and adult eating disorder care. She has held senior clinical and programme development roles within these services. She was the developer and continues to be the clinical lead of a Multi-Diagnostic Eating Disorders Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (MED-DBT) programme for adults with Anorexia Nervosa within a New Zealand specialist service, which was one of the first in the world to implement this treatment model, for which she won an award for innovation in mental health.
Shelly’s work spans a range of settings including private practice, adolescent MH services, day programmes, residential services, group programmes, and school-based mental health initiatives. She works internationally providing training, consultation, and team supervision, supports teams around the world to implement new DBT programmes and regularly presents at national and international conferences. She is involved in research and dissemination and publishes on DBT innovations she is involved with.
In 2025 Shelly was one of four co-convenors of the inaugural international MED-DBT conference, where she ran a number of events; including the design, convening and moderating of a plenary panel of lived experience experts with Autism who work in the field of DBT and ED’s, discussing neurodivergence and affirming care.
Her professional interests centre on training, consultation, and innovative implementation of DBT, with particular emphasis on adaptations of DBT for eating disorders (including MED-DBT), adolescents, trauma-related presentations, and complex, high-risk clinical populations.
