ARFID Across the Lifespan

Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is increasingly recognised across clinical settings, yet many health professionals report feeling uncertain about how to assess, conceptualise, and support individuals experiencing ARFID. The diverse aetiology that can lead to feeding differences, including anxiety, sensory processing differences, trauma, medical complexity, oral motor skill development, and other factors, mean that effective care requires flexible, thoughtful, and collaborative approaches rather than one-size-fits-all treatment models.

This two-day training offers a practical, formulation-driven approach to understanding and working with ARFID across the lifespan. Grounded in current research, clinical experience, and insights from lived experience, the workshop will explore how feeding patterns develop and are maintained, and how clinicians can support individuals and families in ways that are neurodiversity-affirming, inclusive, and responsive to individual needs.

Participants will learn how to identify ARFID presentations, develop meaningful formulations, and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams to support safe, ethical, and effective care. Through case discussions, reflective exercises, and service-planning activities, clinicians will build confidence in translating theory into practice and creating supportive pathways for individuals and families navigating ARFID.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
  • Share insights from lived experience to facilitate improved understanding of the consumer journey and how health professionals can be helpful in supporting individuals with ARFID and their families

  • Provide an overview of predisposing, precipitating and maintaining factors of feeding differences and difficulties to enhance assessment and clinical formulation skills

  • Provide an overview of the evidence base and currently available interventions including transdisciplinary perspectives for ARFID presentations across the lifespan.
